The European Commission has launched a new online portal for the EU initiative “Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform” (STEP). This one-stop shop enables investors, project promoters, and national managing authorities to access key information and identify EU funding opportunities in three strategic sectors: digital technologies and cutting-edge innovation, clean and resource-efficient technologies, and biotechnologies.

Key Features of the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform

The STEP portal is designed to streamline the process of finding and securing funding for high-quality projects. These projects could support the development of new antivirals, the construction of artificial intelligence (AI) models within the EU or provide capacity-building support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in key green technologies. To maximize public and private investment, eligible high-quality projects will receive a “STEP Seal” and be actively promoted through the STEP portal.

Mobilizing Resources for European Industry

STEP leverages resources from eleven EU investment programs to support European industry and boost investments in critical technologies across Europe. This initiative aims to enhance the EU’s competitiveness and reduce strategic dependencies. The Commission is currently evaluating the first set of projects from Member States, with the goal of using cohesion policy funds to support investments in clean, digital, and biotechnological technologies. A list of specific projects funded by STEP will be published in the coming months.

The launch of the STEP portal marks a significant step forward in supporting investments in critical technologies within the EU. By providing a centralized platform for accessing funding opportunities and promoting high-quality projects, the EU aims to foster innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness across its Member States.
