The Basque company, Hawk Biosystems, has won 2.5 million euros in grants and up to 4.5 million euros in capital in the EIC Accelerator call accompanied by FI Group. Out of more than 1,000 companies, this biotech startup, which emerged from Cancer Research UK and the Francis Crick Institute in the UK, is one of 42 companies to win funding in the European EIC Accelerator call.
The project submitted by Hawk Biosystems, accompanied by FI Group, is a disruptive deep-tech project focused on providing ‘Novel biomarker-based assays to guide personalized cancer treatment’. The main objective of the project is to provide hospitals and researchers around the world with a predictive diagnostic test to identify which cancer patients with solid tumours can best benefit from currently available immunotherapies.
With a budget of €675 million, the EIC Accelerator call for 2024 opened last March and will remain open until 3 October. In this case, grants will be less than €2.5 million and investments will range from €0.5 million to €15 million.
The EIC Accelerator supports companies (principally start-ups and SMEs) to scale up high impact innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones. It focuses on innovations building on scientific discovery and where significant funding is needed over a long timeframe before returns can be generated. SME, Small mid-cap or legal entities intending to establish an SME or small mid-cap in an EU Member State or Associated Country by the time of signing the Accelerator contract, can apply to this call. The general annual budget for this call is 675 million. Applicants can apply for a Grant component (70% of eligible costs, maximum EUR 2.5 million) in a Lump Sum contribution and/or equity component (up to 15M).
